Here's the smart way to find out about services for employment-related legal problems. This message lists thirteen (13) agencies in Los Angeles County that provide legal help for employment-related problems. The first eleven (11) agencies are listed in alphabetical order. The last two (2) are mediation services.

Unless otherwise indicated, to qualify for these services, clients must meet specific low-income guidelines and reside in Los Angeles County. It is important to call these agencies first; many do not accept walk-in clients. 

Agency #1. CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND FAIR EMPLOYMENT provides assistance job discrimination cases only, but they also accept and investigate complaints alleging hate crimes. Their phone number is (800) 884-1684.

Agency #2. The CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Bureau of Labor Standards Enforcement provides legal aid for clients who were not paid wages owed to them. Their phone number is (213) 620-6330.

Agency #3. CENTRAL AMERICAN RESOURCE CENTER (CARECEN) provides legal assistance with employment matters, particularly for day laborers and street vendors who are refugees from Central America. Services are free but client must meet federal poverty guidelines multiplied by 175 percent. An economic development and job placement program is also available. CaIl (213) 385-7800.

Agency #4. The U.S. EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION investigates discrimination based on race, color, sex, age, national origin, or religion. Their telephone number is (213) 894-1000.

Agency #5. EQUAL RIGHTS ADVOCATES, INC. primarily conducts litigation in employment related sex discrimination, and provides telephone legal advice and counseling regarding women's constitutional rights and other forms of sexual discrimination. Agency #6. The LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES represents and counsels on wage or unpaid overtime claims and unemployment issues. Agency #7. LAMBDA LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND pursues test-case litigation around the country in all areas of lesbian/gay rights and people with HIV in the areas of employment discrimination. Their telephone number is (213) 937-2728.

Agency #8. MEXICAN AMERICAN LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND (known as MALDEF) provides class action litigation in cases covering employment. Services are free and there are no eligibility requirements. The agency does not accept walk-ins. Their telephone number is (213) 629-2512.

Agency #9. The NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND, INC. provides class action litigation in discrimination cases involving housing, employment, education, and voting rights. Their telephone number is (213) 624-2405.

Agency #10. SAN FERNANDO VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD LEGAL SERVICES provides legal services for Unemployment Insurance Benefits; non-payment of wages, including overtime and minimum wages; claims of exemptions; and responses to wage garnishments. Services are free to residents of the northern portion of Los Angeles proper and Los Angeles County who qualify under Low Income Guidelines. Their telephone number is (818) 896-5211.

The following two services assist in mediating employment law issues. Dispute Resolution Services mediates disputes between employer and employees. The Gay and Lesbian Community Service Center provides assistance and representation in employment discrimination and harassment due to homophobia, sexism and/or HIV status and wage claims.
