This message lists several agencies, in alphabetical order, that provide legal assistance for family law matters and domestic violence matters.

Unless otherwise indicated, to qualify for these services, clients must meet low-income guidelines and reside in Los Angeles County. It is important to call these agencies first; many do not accept walk-in clients. 

ADVOCACY SERVICES provides legal assistance in family, juvenile justice, and other areas to persons involved in mental health or developmental services systems who meet income guidelines. Their telephone number (213) 389-2077.

ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN'S RIGHTS -- provides services for children in the areas of adoption, birth certificates, education, emancipation, foster care, guardianship, health care, name change, probate, and public benefits. Their phone number is (213) 368-6010.

CHILD ABDUCTION UNIT OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE -provides assistance with out-of-state child custody order cases. Their phone number is (213) 974-3931

CLINICA LEGAL provides assistance for family law matters. All their staff speaks Spanish. There is a sliding scale for all services, but the initial consultation is free. Their phone number is (323) 727-2828.

COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICES -- provides assistance in the areas of divorce, paternity, guardianship, and adoption. The service is free to residents of the Southeast area of Los Angeles who qualify under low-income guidelines. Call the Compton office at (310) 638-6194. Call the Norwalk office at (562) 864-9935.

The DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROJECT of the Los Angeles County Bar Association provides assistance with temporary restraining orders at two (2) walk-in clinics. Services are free to victims of domestic violence. The Los Angeles walk-in clinic is located at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Department 8, Room 245, III North Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Their phone number is (213) 624-3665. The Pasadena walk-in clinic is located at the Pasadena office of the Los Angeles Superior Court, Room 100, 300 East Walnut Street, Pasadena, CA 91001.

GAY AND LESBIAN COMMUNITY SERVICES CENTER - provides consultation and limited assistance and representation in the areas of the legal aspects of relationships, domestic violence, child custody and visitation, adoption, and foster parent issues. Services are free, but priority is given to low-income residents of Los Angeles County. Their telephone number is (323) 993-7670.

HARRIET BUHAI CENTER FOR FAMILY LAW - provides advice and consultation for family law cases involving dissolution, guardianship of minors and paternity, custody, visitation, and child and spousal support. No legal representation is provided. Appointments are necessary, there is a waiting list, and there is a $10 fee. No walk-ins are permitted. Callers may not get through to their offices on their first attempt. Their telephone number is (213) 388-7515.

LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES holds a Domestic Violence Clinic which prepares restraining orders, and may provide representation in guardianship, paternity and custody cases to prevent domestic violence from occurring. The walk-in clinic is located in room 102 of the Long Beach Courthouse, at the corner of Ocean and Magnolia in Downtown Long Beach, and is open from 9 to 11:30 and 1 to 3:30, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES SANTA MONICA Domestic Violence Walk-In Clinic at the Santa Monica Superior Court assists victims of domestic violence in obtaining restraining and other protective orders. The program operates Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 11 :30 on a first come, first served basis. They also offer other family law services for victims of Domestic Violence. It is located at 1725 Main Street, room 121, in Santa Monica.

LEVITT AND QUINN FAMILY LAW CENTER - provides assistance in most areas of family law. Cost per session ranges from $40 - $100, depending upon income level. Divorces range from 2 to 3 sessions, and Paternity Actions are usually around 2 sessions. Eligibility is determined according to income and number of dependents. LOS ANGELES CENTER FOR LAW AND JUSTICE -- provides assistance and representation in all areas of family law and guardianship. Free legal help is available to low-income residents of the East/Northeast Los Angeles who are at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. Their telephone number is (323) 980-3500.

LOS ANGELES FREE CLINIC - provides legal advice and consultation only in very limited simple uncontested divorce matters. The Free Clinic does not provide legal representation. Services are free to anyone, regardless of their income and place of residence. Their telephone number is (323) 655-2697. You must call between.12 p.m. and·4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for an appointment.

NEIGHBORHOOD LEGAL SERVICES OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY -- provides legal services for contested and uncontested dissolution; contested custody; domestic violence and harassment, and paternity actions. Services are free to residents of the northern portion of Los Angeles proper and Los Angeles County who qualify under Low Income Guidelines. Their telephone number is (818) 896-5211.

SINGLE PARENTS UNITED 'N KIDS (SPUNK) -- provides legal services for family law matters, including wage assignment, simple uncontested dissolutions, and paternity. There are no residency or income requirements, however, for dissolutions, clients cannot own real property, have a pension or retirement plan, nor have a military case. Clients must know the whereabouts of other partner. A $30 donation is requested for the clinic. Costs on other services vary, but all services are under $150. The TOLL COUNSELING CENTER of the LEGAL AID FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES offers legal advice to low-income people who meet other eligibility requirements on emergency custody and visitation issues, domestic violence, child abduction/concealment, sexual assault, and to parents defending against guardianship actions.  The walk-in only clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis each Monday, Wednesday and Friday that the court is open from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.  Please arrive early because the lines can be long.  The Toll Center is located at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 N. Hill Street on the second floor in Room 245.

YWCA WINGS -- provides legal assistance for Domestic Violence victims through its weekly clinics. Services are free to victims. The program also administers a shelter and counseling services. Their Helpline number is (626) 967-0658.
